A proposal to locate a veterans memorial in North Little Rock's Laman Plaza was unanimously approved by the William F. Laman Public Library Board of Trustees on Wednesday, Feb. 10.

The Veterans Memorial Advisory Committee also approved the specific location within Laman Plaza, a knoll on the southeast corner of Orange Street and Pershing Boulevard.

"I was very pleased with the decision of the North Little Rock Veterans Memorial Advisory Committee last night," said Jeff Baskin, executive director of Laman Library. "I believe it to be the perfect location within Laman Library Plaza. The location will provide views of the memorial from not only the plaza but from Orange Street and Pershing Boulevard. It will be visible from the police department, the post office and North Little Rock High School, as well as the library."

The William F. Laman Public Library, founded in 1946 and located at 2801 Orange St., North Little Rock, conducted a major renovation and expansion project in 2002, increasing in size from about 25,000 square feet to about 50,000 square feet. In 2006, Laman completed a renovation of Laman Plaza, adding rock work and other landscaping, sidewalks, lighting and a gazebo. In 2009, Laman added a 2,000 square-foot climate-controlled exhibition space.
