Your employer implemented two rounds of layoffs over the past 18 months. You're still around, but want to make sure that remains the case after a potential round three.
Well, for starters, stop googling "Olivia Wilde" at work. Especially if you're management. That's just bad form. (Then again, if you're a manager, perhaps you could afford to google Olivia Wilde at work ...)
Instead, google stuff like "How I can be a better employee." Can't hurt.
And check out these tips from the New York Times' Career Couch blog on making yourself an indispensable employee.
For example — less Olivia, more suggesting ways to solve problems. Less Hog/Bachelorette talk, more taking the initiative on projects (no more buck-passing). Less whistling on the way to the restroom with the sports section tucked under your arm (I have no idea what the female equivalent of this is), more creating a niche for yourself based on your strengths.
But remember, no (obvious) sucking up.
The next time your company prepares for another round of layoffs, give them reasons to keep you around. Don't give them a reason to allow you all the time you need to google Olivia from home every day.
