Handicap: I never have established one. I don’t post enough scores and play enough to have one. My average round these days, if I shoot in the mid- to upper 70s, I feel good about it. When I was in college, I think back to my junior year in college, we had the SWC tournament at Pleasant Valley. It was 1987, it might have been the year I made All-SWC. I had a good junior year, I was playing at my best. If you didn’t shoot even par, 1 or 2 over, 1 or 2 under, you didn’t feel real good about it.
How much do you play? I’ll play when recruiting’s done in April. Most of my golf is in May and June. July is a big recruiting month, then I’ll play some in August. Maybe 15 rounds. I play more scrambles than playing 18 holes of medal play.
When/why did you take up the game? I have three brothers, one a year older, one a year younger and one seven years younger. My dad, being in the golf business, he’d cut off clubs for us when we were 3 or 4 years old. He was the golf coach at Baylor for a long time. He was the golf pro at Preston Trail in Dallas when I was a little kid, before we moved to Waco. He’d cut off a putter and a 7-iron for me and my brothers. My mom got upset with him one time. We were out in the backyard, I was probably 3 or 4 years old, and I hit my brother Mike in the head and he had to go get stitches.
If you had to choose one amateur partner in a four-ball, who would it be? Joe Foley (UALR women’s head coach). We play in the PV Four-Ball. We have such a good time. We razz each other; he hits a bad shot, I give him a hard time, and I hit a bad shot, he gives me a hard time. We have a lot of fun. “Fo” can hit it pretty good. He’s going to shoot low to mid 80s.
If you couldn’t be playing golf you’d be ….? Jogging. I like exercising. I really like getting out and throwing the baseball with [son] Hayden or following his basketball team.
What’s the best course you’ve played? Augusta National. Right there is Alotian. They’re both right there with each other.
What’s the course you’d love to play that you haven’t? I hear so much about Pebble Beach. I’ve had buddies who have gone out and played it.
