Cats, as well as dogs, can suffer in hot weather.

There are three things to keep in mind for dogs and cats during steamy summer weather, says Steve Jones, associate professor/livestock specialist with the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture.

'Water, shade and ventilation are essential for your pets,' Jones said.

Pets prefer air-temperature water to cold water, he adds.

Even when pets have access to water, shade and ventilation, there is still the possibility that they could become overheated. Owners should always keep their eyes open, Jones says.

'Watch your pet's behavior,' Jones said. 'Dogs pant and even cats will pant when they're hot. Horses will sweat excessively, and if they get hot enough, their respiration rate will increase.'

 If your pet shows signs of overheating, take action.

'The first step to helping overheated pets is to get then in the shade,' Jones says. 'Secondly, get them into a ventilated location within the shaded area. Overheated pets will then need fluids --plain water.'

Some pets, despite their fur, might be susceptible to sunburn, Jones said. The risk of burn depends on the individual pet, the thickness of their hair and the color of their skin. If a pet gets sunburned, a little moisturizing cream will help with peeling and flaking.

Other tips for pet owners include:

  • When heat advisories are in effect, keep your pets in an air-conditioned area if possible. If they must be outside, make sure they have ample shade available.
  • Do not leave pets unattended in a car while traveling or running errands. Even with the windows cracked, temperatures can get up to 120 degrees F.t in a short time.
  • If pets get too hot, they can suffer from heat exhaustion. Signs include excessive panting, dizziness, hyper-salivation, glazed eyes, rapid heart rate, vomiting, and staggered gait. If these signs are noted, call your veterinarian.
  • Exercise your dog during early morning or late evening hours to take advantage of the coolest temperatures during the day.
