Blake Rutherford of Movies in the Park previews this week's selection, "The Wizard of Oz," which screens Wednesday night at sundown at Riverfront Park.
The Wizard of Oz is screening at sundown today (July 28) at Riverfest Amphitheatre in Little Rock's Riverfront Park as part of Movies in the Park. Admission is free.
The 1939 classic, based on the popular L. Frank Baum stories, follows Dorothy (Judy Garland, already a star at age 16) and her dog Toto as they get caught in a tornado and somehow end up in the land of Oz. There Dorothy meets some memorable friends and foes in her journey to meet the Wizard of Oz who everyone says can help her return home -- and possibly grant her new friends their goals of a brain, heart and courage.
The film's running time is 101 minutes. It's not rated, but is generally OK for kids who aren't afraid of flying monkeys and wicked witches.
The park opens at 6:30 p.m. Bring lawn chairs (or sit in the amphitheatre seats) and coolers if you'd like (alcoholic beverages are OK, but no glass containers, please). Concessions will be available for purchase. Free bug spray can be found at the concession stands.
