A rare stamp collection donated to Levi Hospital in Hot Springs will be presented by Lauray’s - The Diamond Center for the Gallery Walk in downtown Hot Springs Aug. 6.
The collection consists of British stamps ranging in date from the middle of the nineteenth century to the early part of the twentieth century. When viewed as a collection, the stamps hint at the history of the British Empire during that time period.
The stamps were a gift of the late Dr. James Sabal to Levi Hospital in recognition of the care the hospital provided a family member in the 1960s. The stamps were presented to the hospital along with a large cash donation.
The collection, valued at approximately $140,000, includes a 1911 King Edward VII six-pence stamp worth $24,000. The oldest stamp in the collection is an extremely rare 1841 imperforate Queen Victoria.
Lauray’s will remain open until 8 p.m. Aug. 6, as will many of Hot Springs' downtown art galleries.
