Canon Grill is a pleasant neighborhood joint that focuses on burgers, salads and Tex-Mex dishes such as fajitas, burritos, salsa and cheese dip. The kids' menu includes pasta, chicken tenders, grilled cheese on a pita, and nachos. Open 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday-Saturday. Full bar.

Oyster Bar, known for gumbo, shrimp creole, red beans and rice, peel-and-eat shrimp and po-boys, has a kids' menu with fried popcorn shrimp, fried catfish filet, fried chicken strips and grilled cheese (all served with chips, pickle and French bread) and a family-friendly environment. Open 11 a.m.-9:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 11 a.m.-10:30 p.m. Friday, and noon-10 p.m. Saturday. Beer and wine.

U.S. Pizza has a creative selection of pizzas in several sizes plus salads, pastas and sandwiches. The kids' menu includes pizza, cheese sticks, spaghetti and meatballs and grilled cheese. Open 10:30 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 10:30 a.m.-11 p.m. Friday-Saturday, 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Sunday. Full bar.

Vieux Carre, which specializes in New Orleans-style cuisine, has a kids' menu with all items priced at $6. Choices include bowtie pasta with marinara sauce, chicken and cheese quesadillas, turkey wraps and more, all accompanied by tea, juice or a soft drink and a snack-size dessert. Dinner is served from 5:30 p.m. until customers leave Monday-Saturday. Full bar.

I Need a Drink with My Dinner (full-service restaurants with full bars):

Acadia, with dazzling signature dishes such as smoked gouda macaroni and cheese and blackened duck breast with cheese grits and crawfish cole slaw, offers prix fixe three-course dinners for $23.50 from 5:30-10 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays. Full bar. 

Cantina Laredo serves margaritas made from natural ingredients (happy hour is from 4-7 p.m. Monday-Friday) along with sophisticated versions of enchiladas and fajitas, daily fish specials and grilled chicken and steaks complimented by signature sauces. Open from 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Sunday-Thursday and 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Friday-Saturday. Full bar.

Ferneau is a stylish location where chef Donnie Ferneau and his staff impress customers with original award-winning cuisine (seared salmon on quinoa pilaf, rack of lamb on white bean cassoulet, etc.) and great service. Open from 5-10 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday with a late night menu from 10 p.m.-1 a.m. Thursday-Friday and 10 p.m.-midnight Saturday. Full bar. 

So Restaurant-Bar makes a first-class martini and emphasizes fresh seafood and simple, elegant preparation. It's open daily from 11 a.m. until the last customer leaves. Full bar.

Fast and Fun:

Leo's Greek Castle is a tiny Hillcrest landmark with burgers, gyros, veggie burgers, moussaka, falafel, hummus, and Greek salads. Open until 8 p.m. Monday-Saturday. No alcohol.

Pei Wei Asian Diner is a cheery fast-casual restaurant that gets a plate of freshly prepared and fragrant stir-fry (with noodles or rice and your choice of beef, chicken, tofu/veggies or shrimp) in front of you within minutes of ordering at a counter. Open from 10:30 a.m.-9 p.m. Sunday-Thursday, 10:30 a.m.-10 p.m. Friday-Saturday. Beer and wine.

More Pizza:

Damgoode Pies bakes a stuffed pizza that's delicious and feeds twice as many people as the same size unstuffed. Try the pink and white sauces. Open from 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Friday-Saturday, and 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Sunday. Beer (PBR for $1) and wine.
