After graduating from University of Central of Arkansas in December 2009 with a degree in public relations, 23-year-old Katherine Vasilos found her dream job. A lifelong lover of Republican politics and quite the people-person, Katherine sees her position as the Communications Director for the Republican Party of Arkansas as a place where she truly belongs. Since starting there in January 2010, Katherine has seen firsthand how the experiences she gained through internships in college truly paved the way for her future.
What are your daily responsibilities at your job? My one main priority is to conduct media relations. Any communication from the Republican Party of Arkansas to news media comes through me. My responsibilities also include language on our website, press releases, setting up press conferences, composing the weekly electronic newsletter and monitoring news coverage to see how the public is feeling about the party. I am also responsible for all online communication through our website, Twitter and Facebook.
What advice do you have for people who might want to go into your field? Get as many internships as possible. You have to brand yourself. It’s very competitive out there and public relations is all about branding a company or client, and as a student you should brand yourself by the types of clubs and organizations you’re involved in and also by your internships. You want your résumé to stand out.
What is the best part about your job? I am extremely passionate about Republican Party politics, and I feel like I am doing something that I love that can also better the state and country. I feel my work is done to achieve a greater good.
Why did you decide to stay and work in Arkansas? I definitely kept my options open and was willing to move out of state for a job, but I knew I wanted to give back to the state of Arkansas; that was important to me. It’s good to explore and go new places, but I am so proud and thankful to be working here.
WHAT’S THE PAY: The starting salary for someone entering a job in the political realm will vary depending on the position; however a recent college graduate could expect to make around $30,000 a year.
TRY MAJORING IN: Political science, mass communications, marketing or advertising.
WHY IT’S HOT: The government sector makes up a significant percentage of employment levels on both the national and state level. Plus, in times of economic downturns, these jobs are more stable. Job satisfaction is high, as well, because it’s easy to see the difference your work makes.
