Former President George W. Bush spoke Friday at a private event marking the 10th anniversary of the nonprofit The First Tee of Little Rock Jack Stephens Youth Golf Academy in Little Rock.
Bush, in his second trip to Arkansas in seven months, honored Little Rock financier Warren Stephens and his wife, Harriet, for their work to support the organization.
Bush's father, former President George H.W. Bush, came to Little Rock in April 2001 to honor Warren Stephens' father, the late Stephens Inc. chairman Jack Stephens, when the Little Rock academy was dedicated. At the time, George H.W. Bush was the honorary chairman of the national First Tree program.
The First Tee is designed to give youths free access to golf courses, equipment and instruction. An initiative of the World Golf Foundation, The First Tree is dedicated to providing affordable golf access for children who otherwise might not have an opportunity to play.
Since Jack Stephens' death in 2005, and Harriet and Warren Stephens have worked to keep The First Tee of Central Arkansas viable. For five years, Warren Stephens has hosted a tournament at his exclusive Alotian Golf Club in west Pulaski County to raise money for the local First Tee and other organizations.
Golf legends including Phil Mickelson, Arnold Palmer, Tiger Woods, Ben Crenshaw, Jack Nicklaus and others have attended the Alotian golf tournaments.
