Reese Witherspoon sightings abound, and there are daily updates on what's happening with Arkansan Jeff Nichols' film "Mud," filming in Stuttgart, Dumas and thereabouts.
Here's what we know (so far) about the film and its stars.
Who's In It?
Reese Witherspoon is the film's highest profile star, and tipsters are writing in with sightings. Late yesterday, someone alerted us about the "Legally Blonde" star's late lunch at Cafe Bossa Nova. And sure enough, the photo at right turned up later on Bossa Nova's Facebook page. Our tipster said Witherspoon enjoyed a quiet meal; her party was the only one in the restaurant at the time.
And as we all know by now, Witherspoon was spotted earlier this week shopping at Dumas Dollar General Store, which attracted a lot of comments from readers. You can see the photo of her -- near the Fanta aisle? -- right here. Other sightings report the actress dining at Flying Fish over the weekend.
Other established stars -- and one who's quickly rising -- have also signed onto the project, including "Take Shelter" star Michael Shannon, who stars in "Mud" director Jeff Nichols' Oscar-buzzy film "Take Shelter" (be released in late October) and will also be seen in the Zack Snyder "Superman" reboot, scheduled for 2013. Shannon, who's drawn plenty of attention with turns in "Revolutionary Road" and HBO's "Boardwalk Empire," is a rising talent you'll be hearing more of in the coming months.
Also: Little Rock resident and "Deadwood" alum Ray McKinnon, along with playwright/actor Sam Shepard, have joined the cast.
Where Is It Shooting?
Filming of Mud is taking place at the former Clary Elementary building in Stuttgart. And, of course, it's also shooting in Dumas.
Stuttgart residents are pretty excited about the film, according to KNWA-TV in northwest Arkansas:
"Everyone's really excited about it, it's been really great for the town," said Stephen Bell, director of the Stuttgart Chamber of Commerce. ...
"The local production company came to the Chamber of Commerce early on and let us know they were going to buy as much of their materials and use as many of the local stores as they could and they really have been great to work with and they really have done that," Bell said.
An audio report on the shoot by Ron Breeding of KUAR-FM, 89.1 can be heard by clicking here.
What's "Mud" About?
Mud, written as well as directed by Little Rock native Nichols, is the story of two 14-year old boys (one played by Tye Sheridan, the other played by an as yet unnamed Arkansan) who encounter a fugitive (Matthew McConaughey) on an island in the Mississippi River, who needs help in escaping capture and assistance in rekindling an old romance (the former girlfriend is played by Witherspoon).
