So I just returned from an hour-and-a-half tour of the Arkansas Arts Center's "World of the Pharaohs: Treasures of Egypt Revealed" exhibition. And while I agree that it's the must-see event it's billed as, to really get your money's worth, you'll need to see it in a certain way.
To get the best bang for you buck, follow these tips:
Definitely go with a group, and not just any group. You'll enjoy "Pharaohs" more if you're surrounded by an introspective entourage that's interested in debating some of the issues that the exhibit raises. Discussions about gender roles, religion and (surprise!) the afterlife crop up along with other topics.
Go to an exhibit event or discuss it over a meal. Trying to be considerate of the other patrons, my group held our "Pharaohs" conversation after leaving the exhibit – a disadvantage since all that we saw wasn't fresh in our minds. Consider going to one of the center's coinciding events to avoid that problem. Or arrange your tour shortly before lunch, then stop at Best Impressions Restaurant to talk about the exhibit over a meal.
Take the headphones for audio tour -- or don't! The audio tour includes information not printed on the placards, but not for every item. I didn't opt for the headphones, but I don't regret the decision. There's plenty to read.
Running late for a scheduled tour? Relax. Although you have to schedule a time to see the exhibit, don't stress too much if you're running late. I was stressed because my group ran behind, but in the end, it wasn't a big deal. This isn't an excuse to be late, but know that the exhibit staff is an understanding bunch.
Don't miss the video at the start of the exhibit. It's tempting to skip the video because the sound isn't very loud, and you're not told know how long it lasts. But don't miss it. The video is only about five minutes long, it includes interesting information not shared in the rest of the exhibit. And its images help frame the exhibition.
Watch your wallet in the gift shop! The way the exhibit is structured, you have no choice but to pass through an Egyptian-themed gift shop once you're finished. Smart move Arts Center! I was of course in an Egyptian mood and they got a little more money off me.
