Reggie Marshall and Jim Clements, owners of the antiques store Marshall Clements, would travel to the ends of the earth for you. Seriously. The duo—which began collecting and selling rare antiquities 28 years ago—specialize in discovering unusual pieces from times and worlds long forgotten and showcasing them for sale in their 12,000 square foot showroom in Riverdale.
It's not your run-of-the-mill antiques store, and it's certainly not a “vintage” shop. For instance, if you're looking for a set of Fire King Peach Lustre custard cups from the late fifties, you won't find them here. Instead, Marshall and Clements “stock” their store with things like Chinese porcelains, antique blue and white accessories and a phenomenal collection of 18th century furniture and paintings.
Setting foot inside is almost like setting foot in another country altogether; the store is literally brimming with ancient vestiges sought on their regular trips to France, Spain, China, Italy, Belgium, Russia, North Africa and beyond. We love to get lost amid the relics and pretend like we're on an expedition somewhere quiet, dark and exotic.
On one of our recent visits, some of our favorite finds included: a pair of French Gothic revival leather and mohair chairs, circa 1900; a pair of 17th century Italian polychrome and sliver gilt on wood angels; a Louis XVI trumeau featuring a hunt scene, circa 1770; and an 18th century wooden Santos from Buenos Aires.
And that's just the beginning of the treasure trove.
