Granddad, Corinne and Katie Lee, having fun.

My family's beloved Katie Lee died yesterday. Katie Lee was one of the last link's to my Grandmother – a sweet dog that never left my Granddad’s side after Grandmother died in 2001.

For my Granddad, Katie Lee has been a constant companion and a true friend. This from the man who always referred to previous dogs of my Grandmother’s as "that damn dog." But Katie Lee was different. The two of them turned to each other when my Grandmother died. They became fast friends, and Katie Lee was the first thing to greet my Granddad when he walked through the door each day.

I didn’t grow up with pets, so I don't fully understand the relationships between people and their dogs, but I do know this – my Granddad lost a dear friend yesterday. He lost a precious link to my Grandmother. I can only imagine the heartache he is feeling today. My heart aches for him and for the loss to our family.

We will miss Katie Lee and the love she had for my Granddad. We will miss her sweet nature with the new babies in the family and her constant presence wherever my Granddad was. But most of all, I think we will miss that connection we felt to my Grandmother whenever Katie Lee was in the room.

I know that Katie Lee is roaming around up there with Grandmother now, and I can only imagine that the two of them are having a fabulous time together. We miss both of them dearly, but know they are keeping a close eye on all of us. And that is truly comforting.

(After the jump, two more pics of Katie Lee and the family. And feel free to share stories of your special family friends in comments.)
