Listen? Can you hear it? No whining. No ringing. No demanding. Just peace and quiet.
I’m not rubbing this in, I swear …. But as you read this, I’m on a sunny beach in Mexico, reading my book, sipping on something fruity and trying (desperately) not to check my iPhone every five minutes. About six months ago, I decided that I was going to put together a girls' trip for all the moms I know that are juggling life, work, kids, husbands, you name it. Like any good event, it needed a name, so I called it Moms in Mexico.
I decided that we all needed to go somewhere sunny where we could read our books, listen to the Glee album (or some dreadful ‘80s mix tape), drink pina coladas all day and basically ignore the world. I had a lot of interest, but could only nail down three other moms to go with me. I expect after all the pictures we post on Facebook and the tweets, we’ll have others who start saving now for next year’s trip!
I’m a big fan of moms having other moms to connect with and share the daily kid/husband/work drama. Girlfriends are so important for us to stay sane and be reminded that there are others who are dealing with the same struggles and frustrations posed by The Juggling Act. I have been very blessed over the years to have great friends who I can always come to with life’s ups and downs.
In the past three years, I’ve become close to some awesome women — moms of 11 very special friends who started in daycare with my son when they were all 3 months old. Many of us were first-time moms with no clue on how to take care of a baby and manage the fine balance between work and home. Our children are now 4 years old and off to different preschools, but the moms are still getting together for our monthly Mom’s Night Out dinners. I have a feeling we’ll still be getting together when our kiddos are heading off to college.
Three of my “Mom’s Night Out” friends came with me on this Mexico trip. Our children have a special friendship, which, in turn, helped us create a special bond over the years. It’s a great feeling to know other working moms like these three who completely understand the daily struggles I face of managing a home and a career. It’s not easy, but I believe any of us can do this juggling act (and do it well) with the support of great girlfriends!
Doesn’t that want to make you go and mark the calendar for Moms in Mexico: Round 2?!
I think my margarita is calling me now …
