Jane Ann Fortenberry
Kindergarten Teacher, Episcopal Collegiate School
I have been an educator for more than half of my life, knowing in the fifth grade this was my destiny. From teaching special education students to gifted students, I have experienced it all. When Episcopal Collegiate School opened its doors in 2009 to lower school students, I knew it was a challenge I could not resist. My dear friend and colleague, Patti Coleman, grabbed my hand and said, “Let’s do it!” It has been the perfect opportunity for me to share my expertise, grow as an educator and embrace the philosophy of my school that all students are children of a loving God.
ON POWER
People often underestimate the power of laughter. I felt most powerful when a parent nicknamed me the “child whisperer.” A true sign of power is knowing when to listen with your heart.
ON SUCCESS
Success is doing what you love and believing in it: I get up every morning to go to a place I believe in to do what I love.
ON MOTIVATION
Each school year, the children in my classroom remind me not to overlook the simple pleasures of life — heartfelt hugs, a new backpack, story time and going down the slide with your new best friend.
Career goal? To become a published author of children’s books.
POWERFUL DAY
My first powerful moment happened June 7, 1980, the day my daughter, Anna, was born. Three years later, I was blessed with a second powerful day, July 30, 1983, the day Katie arrived. The journey I have experienced with “my girls,” has made me a better person, a better friend and a better teacher.
