The Arkansas Arts Center, Ninth and Commerce streets, Little Rock, will present the lecture Gustave Courbet and the Modern Landscape, a lecture by Mary Morton, on Thursday,March 11. A reception will be held at 6 p.m. followed a lecture at 6:30 p.m. in the Arkansas Arts Center Lecture Hall.
Mary Morton, curator of French Paintings at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., will present the lecture, providing context for the Arts Center’s recent acquisition of a seascape by Courbet. She will discuss Courbet’s sea and landscapes in relation to the other genres of painting in which Courbet worked. She will also discuss the influence Courbet’s painting had on the Impressionists and later generations of artists.
