In February of 1863, more than three times as many Madison County men enlisted in the Union Army than any other month of the war. Armed with this tantalizing statistic, Rebecca Howard explores the events of the previous month in Madison County.
Defined by guerrilla action, occupation by Union troops, the hanging of a Unionist woman by local irregular troops and culminating with the execution of nine prisoners by the Union Army, this tumultuous January captures the complex hardships faced by Arkansans during the Civil War.
